Well Water Tests
We continue to urge all members and friends to have their well water tested annually for their personal interest and to help GUPACA build our well water quality data base. Bottles for testing well water may be picked up Monday through Friday from 8:00am to noon and 1:00pm to 4:00pm at the Health/Conservation office at 220 West Main Street (in the Department of Public Works building). The Health/Conservation telephone number is 508 349-0308. Water should be drawn on Wednesday mornings and dropped off at the Health/Conservation office by 9:30am that day. We will again have bottles for taking samples and instructions at our meeting on August 13. We ask everyone to share their results by sending a copy of the analysis to GUPACA at P.O. Box 1113, South Wellfleet, MA 02663. The data gathered to date may be viewed at www.gupaca.org and clicking on “well water tests.”
Pond Data Collection
The GUPACA Board has initiated a program to build a data base of information relevant to the use and health of Gull Ponds and the chain of connected ponds. The collected data will include:
- Water clarity
- Plant growth
- Pond usage as measured by counting on every other Saturday in summer
- cars at the Town Beach
- cars at the Sluice
- sailboats, canoes, kayaks etc on the ponds and beached at the Sluice
- bathers at the Sluice
- Coloform levels at the Town Beach
- Septic systems within 100 feet of shore that are not Title V compliant
We will post the data on the GUPACA website, send it to all members and to the Wellfleet Board of Selectmen. We will also request an opportunity to present the data to a Board of Selectmen meeting in the Fall. We plan this to be an ongoing project that will build up a multi-year data base.
